Jurgen Klopp challenges his Liverpool squad to seize ‘really special’ opportunity to become history-makers… as the Reds aim to beat Man City in the FA Cup semi-finals and move one step closer to an unprecedented quadruple

Jurgen Klopp has urged his team to create history as he accepted that Liverpool’s season will not be viewed as a success if it ends with just one trophy.

Liverpool return to Wembley on Saturday aiming for a similar outcome to their last visit to the stadium in February, when they beat Chelsea to win the Carabao Cup on penalties. They have not played in an FA Cup final since 2012 and Klopp is determined to put that right.

The German is in unchartered territory as a Liverpool manager as none of his predecessors has reached this stage of the campaign still chasing a clean sweep. In 1984, when they won the League, League Cup and European Cup, they were knocked out of the FA Cup in January.

Jurgen Klopp is trying to lead Liverpool to an unprecedented Quadruple this season

Though Klopp still finds talk of the quadruple outlandish — he will not look further ahead than Saturday afternoon’s tussle with Manchester City — he understands that some will think they have fallen short if they don’t lift at least one more piece of silverware.

‘I’m really happy for the boys,’ said Klopp. ‘At this club it is so difficult to do something that our fathers and grandfathers didn’t do already. This specific thing, nobody did it in this club. So it is really special. But I know… if that is the success this year, it will not be seen as success in the future.

‘This year is especially intense but it is enjoyable and exciting. Is it likely that we win the four competitions? No. Three competitions? No. One more? Hopefully. That would be nice.

‘Being ready for that all the time is really difficult, but very interesting and exciting too. City are crazy good. There is not one per cent that if we win we are a step closer to whatever you want to call it.

‘It means we are in the final of the FA Cup which would then mean we play against Crystal Palace or Chelsea and neither of them are somehow like a tourist.

Klopp has admitted it is exciting that Liverpool could win three more trophies this term

He is taking things one game at a time, though, starting with Saturday’s game against Man City

‘We just prepare the game. You just go for it and try and do the right stuff on the pitch, we don’t look further and at the bigger picture. That is not how it is, at least not for me.’

Klopp will make wholesale changes to his team at Wembley, having had the luxury of resting several key men against Benfica on Wednesday. Mohamed Salah will lead the line and his manager expects the Egyptian to have a flying end to the campaign.

‘I know that Mo will finish strong,’ said Klopp. ‘It’s just at the moment we have to reset because each game for us is a final.’
