‘Danny, have you turned your phone off?’: Gary Lineker pokes fun at Danny Murphy on Match of the Day after the pundit claimed he got ‘paranoid’ after BBC porn prank – and jokes there will only be ‘moans and groans’ from Everton fans

Gary Lineker ribbed Danny Murphy days after the BBC porn prank left them both embarrassed during live football coverage when they were together on Match of the Day.

A serial prankster left a device in the BBC’s live studio from Liverpool’s FA Cup win at Wolves on Tuesday night, playing ‘porn noises’ on TV to millions of viewers.

In the aftermath, Murphy said he was left ‘paranoid’ by the incident, uncertain that he wasn’t involved, but also without realising the disturbance was coming from their studio.

Danny Murphy, who admitted being ‘paranoid’ as the sounds continued, was the butt of a joke

And the 45-year-old former Liverpool midfielder was the butt of one of Lineker’s usual jokes which are sprinkled amongst the content of BBC1’s weekend highlights package Match of the Day.

The 62-year-old presenter opened the show by saying ‘Let’s hope we’re not rudely interrupted’, before asking the pundit: ‘Danny Murphy, have you turned your phone off?’

Murphy confirmed that he had, and the show continued as normal, including highlights of Saturday’s big Premier League fixtures.

Serial prankster Daniel Jarvis later owned up to being behind the prank, using a mobile phone

Lineker added another quip about Tuesday’s unfortunate incident when he said: ‘There have been plenty of moans and groans this week… from West Ham and Everton fans’, before introducing the highlights of the Hammers’ 2-0 win at the London Stadium.

Speaking after Tuesday’s incident on Newsnight, Lineker said he found the incident funny, and has carried that humour across to the weekend’s coverage. He also questioned why the BBC had apologised for the prank.
