Thousands of Liverpool fans line the streets around the city as Jurgen Klopp’s men parade their FA Cup and Carabao Cup trophies – less than 24 hours after their Champions League final heartbreak in Paris

Fans lined the streets to welcome Liverpool home hours after their Champions League final heartache as Jurgen Klopp and his Premier League stars paraded their FA Cup and Carabao Cup trophies on an open-top bus tour.

The Reds could not capture a treble as they were narrowly beaten by Real Madrid at the Stade de France on Saturday but they received a rapturous reception as they weaved through Liverpool to celebrate a sensational season.

Manager Klopp was seen grinning with his players, who missed out on the Premier League title to Manchester City on the final day of the season despite beating Wolves at Anfield.

The parade had been planned since the team won the FA Cup final earlier in May and fans were out in full force for the players

The scenes were reminiscent of the colourful tour the team went on after winning the Premier League in the 2019/20 season

Roads were closed around the city as the squad took a route of more than eight miles in a ceremony that had been planned since the side’s dramatic FA Cup final win over Chelsea on penalties on May 14.

Klopp was seen sampling a beer and players including formidable defender Virgil van Dijk, who was nominated for the Ballon d’Or, also enjoyed a drink.

Smiling Premier League joint top-scorer Mohamed Salah appeared to have recovered from the despair of failing to win Europe’s most prestigious club competition.

Pyrotechnics were the order of the day as Liverpudlians showed their pride at the team despite their Champions League loss

The Anfield faithful have become accustomed to challenge for honours under the leadership of German boss Jurgen Klopp

The players embarked on a lap of honour on the bus stretching more than eight miles across the city where they are adored

Viewers went to great lengths to ensure they were in position to gain a glimpse of Klopp and his players during the procession

Fans have followed the team to Wembley twice this season and saw them go on an unbeaten Champions League run to Paris

Vinicius Junior scored the winner for Madrid in the final with a 59th-minute strike that Liverpool were unable to reply to. 

Prolific striker Salah confirmed this week that he will stay at Anfield next season but is yet to extend his contract beyond the end of the 2022-23 campaign.

Sadio Mane appeared pensive in some shots of the celebration as the Senegal favourite continues to be linked with a move to German giants Bayern Munich amid reports he wants to leave this summer for a new challenge.

Captain Jordan Henderson started the final and waved to his admirers as he took the plaudits at the end of a season in which Liverpool finished a point behind City. 

City wobbled on a thrilling final day of the title race, falling 2-0 behind to Aston Villa as a shock defeat loomed – and that would have allowed Liverpool to overtake them with their victory against Wolves.

Pep Guardiola’s side rallied late to beat Villa 3-2 and retain the title at the Etihad Stadium, ensuring Liverpool’s win was academic.

The Reds were able to enjoy marking their double hours after their agonising defeat in the showdown at the Stade de France

The bus set off from Allerton Maze and weaved its way towards The Strand, flanked by crowds as well as police and stewards

Liverpool FC Women were also able to relax on board and reflect on winning a trophy in style as they dominated their league

The team breezed to the FA Women’s Championship title in style, finishing 11 points clear of second-placed rivals London City

Both of the teams were cheered on by thousands of onlookers as the city recognised their stars with a vast turnout for the tour

Improvising fans had some of the choicest views of the parade and were not shy to let off flares, filling the skies with colour

The club’s women’s side, who won the FA Women’s Championship in April, were among the stars on the bus showing off hard-earned silverware.

Liverpool FC Women finished 11 points clear of second-placed London City, joining the men’s side in losing only twice all season.

The parade fell on the 37th anniversary of the Heysel Stadium disaster, and tributes were also paid to the 39 supporters who lost their lives in the tragedy.
