THE NOTEBOOK: Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s renaissance at Man United continues in FA Cup semi-final win, Harry Maguire is spared by his ineligibility and Brighton pair show why they should be considered for England

Manchester United reached the final of the FA Cup with a penalty shootout victory over Brighton.

Both sides failed to find the back of the net after 120 minutes, but the Red Devils scored all of their penalties to reach the final as Brighton’s Solly March skied his effort over the bar.

Erik ten Hag’s side will face their local rivals Man City in the final on June 3 – the first time the two sides have ever met in a final.

Meanwhile, the wait goes on for Brighton who were hoping to reach their first FA Cup final in 40 years.

Mail Sport’s SAMI MOKBEL runs you through five things you might have missed from the semi-final clash.

Wan-Bissaka’s renaissance continues

Manchester United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s head-to-head against Kaoura Mitoma emerged as one of the key Wembley battles here.

And Wan-Bissaka, who was excellent, is heading towards a defining summer as his United renaissance continues.

The right-back looked certain to leave Old Trafford in January but has since proved an important player for Erik ten Hag during the second half of the season.

And it is not beyond the realms of possibility that Wan-Bissaka will cap his United revival with a new contract at the end of the season.

His current deal expires next year, but Mail Sport has learned a potential extension is not being discounted.

If talks over his United future do not reach a positive conclusion there is a good chance the 25-year-old leaves ahead of next season.

If he does, then Crystal Palace will be at the front of the queue to take him back to Selhurst Park.

The south London club, who sold Wan Bissaka to United for £50million in 2019, had hoped to be in a position to re-sign the defender in January but his unexpected revival resulted in United scuppering those plans.

But Palace remain keen and it is understood the Eagles stand a very good chance of landing Wan Bissaka this summer if he does not re-commit to a new deal.

Fatboy Slim misses out

World-renowned DJ – and huge Brighton fan – Fatboy Slim will want to check his diary next time he books in a concert commitment.

The musician, whose real name is Norman Cook, was forced to miss one of the biggest days in the Seagulls’ history because he was playing a set at the Groovin’ the Moo festival in Canberra, Australia, on Sunday.

His presence was still felt here at the national stadium, though, his classic Funk Soul Brother played on the PA system at half-time.

Fatboy Slim’s concert commitment meant he couldn’t watch his beloved Brighton on Sunday

De Zerbi slips down pecking order

As Brighton prepared for an FA Cup semi-final at Wembley – Tottenham were on the way to be thrashed 6-1 at Newcastle. Seagulls head coach Roberto De Zerbi is among the managers Spurs have considered as they look to appoint Antonio Conte’s long-term successor ahead of next season.

But it is understood the Italian has slipped down Daniel Levy’s shortlist in recent days after Spurs made initial enquiries as to what it might take to lure De Zerbi to north London for next season.

He remains an option for Spurs, but the north London club do not view De Zerbi as one of their priority candidates. Julian Naglesmann and Arne Slot are among the names towards the top of Levy’s list.

On the evidence of what happened on Sunday, that may not be the worst thing in the world for De Zerbi.

Roberto De Zerbi has dropped down the pecking order to become the next Tottenham manager – something that may not be the worst thing after Spurs’ 6-1 loss to Newcastle

Maguire spared by ineligibility

When Harry Maguire returns from suspension for Thursday’s visit to Tottenham, the England defender will fear the collapse of his United career will be exposed to a new low.

Maguire’s ineligibility for the Wembley showdown spared him the potential ignominy of missing out on the starting XI despite the fact he is one of just two fit senior centre-backs at the club.

With Lisandro Martinez out for the season and Raphael Varane also an injury concern, Maguire – if he wasn’t suspended – may have hoped to play next Victor Lindelof against Brighton.

But it has been indicated to Mail Sport that Erik ten Hag was leaning towards playing first-choice left-back Luke Shaw, who returned to fitness for this game after a hamstring injury, instead of Maguire.

Harry Maguire would have unlikely played even if he was eligible to take part in the match

England shout for Brighton pair

260 – the number of touches Brighton centre-backs Lewis Dunk and Adam Webster had between them – with both close to registering 90 percent success rates.

In comparison United’s centre-half pairing of Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelof accumulated 128 touches between them – less than Webster had in the entire game.

England anyone?

In-form Lewis Dunk and Adam Webster should give Gareth Southgate something to ponder
