Millwall 1-2 Crystal Palace: Eagles come from behind thanks to goals from Michael Olise and Jean-Philippe Mateta to avoid FA Cup upset at local rivals after Benik Afobe seized on Jack Butland howler to score

Crystal Palace midfielder Michael Olise was struck by a bottle and team-mate Conor Gallagher subjected to homophobic chants as ugly scenes marred the Eagles’ comeback victory.

Some home fans at The Den had earlier booed the Palace players as they took the knee before kick-off, while a flare was also thrown on to the pitch from the visiting end.

Gallagher had set up Olise to level the scoring with a fine goal after a first-half Jack Butland howler had gifted Millwall the lead before Olise turned provider for Jean-Philippe Mateta to net the winner.

Jean-Philippe Mateta celebrates after scoring Crystal Palace’s winning goal in their FA Cup third round clash with Millwall

Mateta hung in the air to head home Michael Olise’s perfect cross from the right-hand side to score Palace’s winning goal

Olise had curled home a lovely shot to equalise for Palace barely a minute after the restart at The Den

Having struggled to assert themselves during the opening half, Palace re-emerged a different proposition and soon levelled

Millwall have threatened to ban any supporter for life for making homophobic chants towards Chelsea loanee Gallagher, while Palace boss Patrick Vieira was proud of his players for taking the knee. ‘We are against any kind of discrimination,’ said Vieira. ‘This is not something we want to see on the field. Taking the knee is something we’re really proud to take.’

A Millwall spokesperson said: ‘Any individual found guilty of discriminatory abuse is issued with an immediate lifetime ban’. Lions boss Gary Rowett added: ‘I don’t think either club want to see any of those moments off the pitch.’

ITV commentator Clive Tyldesley was forced to apologise for ‘obscene language’ heard criticising fans who booed the knee, after defending the Millwall players’ decision not to perform the gesture.

Benik Afobe had handed Millwall a first-half lead when he seized upon an error from Palace keeper Jack Butland to slot home

Butland passed the ball straight to Afobe while trying to pass the ball out of defence, leaving the striker with a simple finish

‘It’s not a protest. The club’s initiatives on equality and community were documented earlier. It is Millwall’s choice,’ said Tyldesley before the boos were heard, then added: ‘Personal choice is one thing, booing players making their choice is another. That does nothing for the cause or for the club.’

The scenes marred what was an excellent comeback from Palace. In Vieira, they have a manager engineered to succeed and motivated by winning trophies. In Olise, struck by a bottle while he prepared to take a corner, Palace have a talent capable of singlehandedly turning matches in their favour.

Palace were second best in the first half but a dusting down by Vieira and an inspired Olise sent the Eagles through. Excitement is building as Vieira revamps his squad with youthful exuberance but the last thing Palace needed here was a sluggish start. Goalkeeper Butland did not get the memo, gifting Benik Afobe a goal.

Olise removes a bottle that was thrown at him from the Millwall fans during the second-half at The Den

It took half an hour for Palace to make strides. But just before half-time Olise, 20, took possession on the right wing, darted inside and curled a terrific shot in off a post.

Palace’s second just before the hour mark was inevitable. Olise picked up possession, darted inside before picking out Mateta with pinpoint precision. Olise is far from the finished article as Vieira knows but this will set him up perfectly for a run of Premier League action.

‘What is important is that when you look at the first half and then you look at the second half, he is two different players,’ Vieira said.

‘There is fantastic potential in the player but at the same time, he needs time to keep developing.’

The winger was pelted with bottles, a flare and other objects as he shushed the home fans after Palace had taken the lead

Quickly on to the 3pm games

Without further ado, it’s on to the 10 FA Cup ties kicking off at 3pm.

Highlights include Leicester vs Watford, Kidderminster vs Reading and Newcastle vs Cambridge.

You can join my colleague Sam McEvoy to follow all the goals from those games – plus the finale if Bristol City vs Fulham – by clicking the link below.

And if you refresh this page in a few minutes, you can read the match report from The Den.

14:43

The scores in the early FA Cup games

Mansfield Town 2 Middlesbrough 3
Bristol City 0 Fulham 0 (Latest – in extra time)
Burnley 1 Huddersfield Town 2
Coventry City 1 Derby County 0
Hartlepool United 2 Blackpool 1
Millwall 1 Crystal Palace 2

14:39

FULL-TIME: Millwall 1 Crystal Palace 2

Matt Smith in the dying seconds there winning a header but it’s straight at Jack Butland, who gratefully collects the ball.

And that is it, Palace have seen their way past Millwall.

They suffered a scare though, falling behind when Benik Afobe capitalised on a howler from Jack Butland doing the opening half.

But Palace were a completely different proposition after half-time, drawing level thanks to Michael Olise’s superb curling shot before Jean-Philippe Mateta headed the winner.

14:37

90+3min – Late Millwall pressure

Another great cross and Palace can’t deal with it decisively. The ball somehow gets through a crowded penalty box for a Millwall corner. Malone delivers, Hutchinson with the header but not enough on it.

14:34

90min – Five added minutes

Millwall will hope and pray for just one more chance.

14:31

88min – Boateng inches away

Millwall come very close there with a cross by Billy Mitchell just inches away from the outstretched boot of sub Nana Boateng right in front of goal.

14:30

86min – Can Millwall force a leveller?

Millwall up against the clock now as the minutes tick down. They made a triple sub a few minutes ago with giant Matt Smith one of those brought on. Can they force extra time?

14:27

RESULT: Burnley 1 Huddersfield 2

There first Premier League side to exit the competition are Burnley. They lose 2-1 at home to Championship side Huddersfield Town thanks to that late Pearson winner.

14:26

RESULTS from the 12.30 games

Bristol City 0 Fulham 0 – Going to extra time
Coventry City 1 Derby County 0
Hartlepool United 2 Blackpool 1

14:22

78min – Millwall pressure

Millwall piling on the pressure now. Bennett with the low effort from inside the box after a scramble but it lacked power and Butland was down to claim it.

14:20

GOAL UPDATE: Burnley 1 Huddersfield 2

And we have an upset on our hands – Premier League strugglers Burnley have now fallen behind to Championship Huddersfield. Matthew Pearson has put them 2-1 up with only three minutes left.

14:17

73min – Not quite for Afobe

Millwall haven’t threatened the Palace goal at all really during the second half but a lapse by Joel ward allowed them in there. A cross from the left and Benik Afobe cannot quite connect with the shot.

14:13

RESULT: Mansfield Town 2 Middlesbrough 3

All over at Mansfield and they have been left heartbroken by that late own goal that takes Middlesbrough through to the next round.

14:12

68min – Olise targeted

You really don’t like to see that. A bottle is thrown from the stands and it brushes Michael Olise as he prepares to take a corner for Palace. Not a full impact thankfully. He kicks it off the pitch.

14:10

GOAL UPDATE: Mansfield 2 Middlesbrough 3

Oh no – disaster for Mansfield after they’d fought back to level things at 2-2. An own goal from John Joe O’Toole in the fifth minute of stoppage time appears to have seen Middlesbrough through to the next round.

14:09

GOAL UPDATE: Burnley 1 Huddersfield 1

The other Premier League side in action have been pegged back! Josh Koroma equalises for Huddersfield with 16 minutes left at Turf Moor.

14:08

65min – Two Palace subs

Palace are now making a double change. Ebere Eze is going off for Christian Benteke, while Jean-Philippe Mateta is coming off for Odsonne Edouard.

14:06

62min – Millwall change

Millwall responding to falling behind by bringing on Mason Bennett for Alex Pearce. They have just under half an hour to find a way back.

14:02

GOAL! Millwall 1 Crystal Palace 2 – Jean-Philippe Mateta 58mins

Turnaround complete! Again it owes everything to Michael Olise, who has the Millwall defenders backing off. He cuts back onto his left and delivers the perfect cross for Jean-Philippe Mateta, who is left unmarked and heads it into the net.

Delight in the away end. A flare is hurled onto the pitch from the away end during the celebrations, causing a pause in the game.

14:00

GOAL UPDATE: Mansfield 2 Middlesbrough 2

Mansfield had a goal chalked off for offside a few minutes ago but their late rally has now yielded an equaliser. Rhys Oates has scored it and they now have five minutes plus stoppage time to find a winner otherwise it’s extra time.

13:57

51min – Olise off the post

A big let off there for Millwall. It’s Olise again, cutting inside onto his left foot as he did with the goal. Again it strikes the post but this time the ball bounces back out rather than in.

13:53

GOAL UPDATE: Hartlepool United 2 Blackpool 1

Hartlepool have produced a stunning turnaround and we could have an upset in the north-east. Joe Grey has put them in front against Blackpool.

13:50

GOAL! Millwall 1 Crystal Palace 1 – Michael Olise 46 mins

What a lovely finish! Great work by Michael Olise and within seconds of the restart, Crystal Palace have hauled themselves level.

He cuts in from the right-hand side after Mateta had worked the ball out to him. Onto the left foot and a curling effort that kisses the far post as it finds the net.

A little so easy the way Olise got inside Scott Malone onto his left foot. The Millwall man should have shown him the other way.

Replays showing that Mateta would have been offside in the build-up. But no VAR in operation. Only at the Premier League grounds this weekend.

13:49

KICK-OFF: We’re back underway at The Den

Patrick Vieira having some sharp words with his players in the tunnel before they re-emerged for the second-half. Millwall, who lead 1-0, get us back underway.

13:41

GOAL UPDATE: Mansfield 1 Middlesbrough 2

And it might not be all over at Mansfield either. They have halved the deficit thanks to Oliver Hawkins and now have about 25 minutes to find a leveller and force extra time. No replays this year remember.

13:40

GOAL UPDATE: Hartlepool 1 Blackpool 1

And just as I posted that last update, Hartlepool equalised early in the second-half in their tie with Blackpool. David Ferguson has got it.

13:38

Latest around the grounds

Away from south London, Burnley are on course to make it through to the fourth round as they lead Huddersfield 1-0 thanks to Jay Rodriguez’s header.

Middlesbrough in control of their tie at Mansfield, they lead 2-0 with half an hour or so to play.

Keshi Anderson was on target to give Blackpool the lead at Hartlepool and Dom Hyam has given Coventry the lead against Derby. Bristol City and Fulham remains goalless.

13:33

HALF-TIME: Millwall 1 Crystal Palace 0

The whistle blows after three minutes of stoppage time and applause from three sides of the ground for Millwall’s combative first half display. Gary Rowett will be thrilled at how well they have defended their lead gifted to them when Jack Butland presented the ball straight to Benik Afobe to slot home.

13:28

42min – Gallagher wasteful

Conor Gallagher draws a foul from Dan McNamara wide on the left and then delivers the free-kick. But it’s overhit, sails over everyone and is a complete waste. That sums it up for Palace.

13:22

36min – Gallagher flashes shot wide

That’s by far the closest Palace have come so far. A wonderful hit by Conor Gallagher from just outside the box. Straight as an arrow but a couple of feet wide of the post.

13:21

Half-time scores in the 12.30 kick-offs

Bristol City 0 Fulham 0
Burnley 1 Huddersfield Town 0
Coventry City 1 Derby County 0
Hartlepool United 0 Blackpool 1

13:20

34min – Vieira gets a ticking off

Anthony Taylor just going over to have a word with Palace manger Patrick Vieira, who doesn’t look very happy down there on the sidelines.

13:15

GOAL UPDATE: Coventry City 1 Derby County 0

A breakthrough in the all-Championship tie in Coventry and the hosts take the lead through Dom Hyam three minutes before the break.

13:14

28min – Ojo shot

A fine run by Sheyi Ojo wins a Millwall corner. Scott Malone with the outswinger this time and Palace only half clear. Ojo returns the ball with a low, bobbling shot and Butland ensures he has his full body behind it.

13:11

HALF-TIME: Mansfield Town 0 Middlesbrough 2

All going to plan for Championship side Middlesbrough at the moment – they lead Mansfield Town 2-0 at half-time.

13:11

24min – Schlupp tries his luck

Palace looking for a route back into the game and Jeffrey Schlupp is afforded plenty of room to run forward and shoot. George Long keeps his eye on the shot and pushes it to safety.

13:03

GOAL! Millwall 1 Crystal Palace 0 – Benik Afobe 18mins

Oh no Jack Butland! That is a gift of a goal!

The keeper trying to play out from the back with Palace pinned in. Two players on him, Butland hesitates, can’t find the pass and it is intercepted by Benik Afobe who spins and is left with an empty goal to finish in to.

Little sympathy for Butland from the home fans of course!

13:01

GOAL UPDATE: Burnley 1 Huddersfield Town 0

The Premier League side ahead at Turf Moor and it’s Jay Rodriguez who breaks the deadlock for Burnley.

Rodriguez had already seen two opportunities go begging but it was a case of third time lucky as he heads home.

12:57

11min – Gallagher takes a blow to the face

Conor Gallagher requires some treatment here. Looks like he has been caught in the face and blood has been drawn. A sharp elbow from George Saville as they both competed for the ball in the air. The Palace medical team just patching up the wound.

12:55

9min – Afobe shoots wide

A pretty good opening for Millwall there. Benik Afobe, at the near post, swings his leg and blazes his shot high and wide after good work by Tom Bradshaw to dig out a low cross from the left.

12:48

2min – Malone bounces one off the bar

Bright start by Millwall as they force an early corner. Inswinger from Scott Malone and it curls onto the top of the crossbar with Jack Butland confident he had it covered.

12:45

KICK-OFF: Millwall vs Crystal Palace is underway

11th in the Championship versus 11th in the Premier League as two south London rivals clash.

The strains of Hey Jude fade away as Palace get us off and running.

Some boos for the Palace players who took the knee.

12:42

Here come the teams at The Den

A cracking atmosphere at The Den as the players emerge onto the field for a very tasty FA Cup third round tie between Millwall and Crystal Palace.

Palace are in a blue and white shirt today, a special edition to honour the 150th anniversary of their first FA Cup campaign.

The Millwall anthem, Let ‘Em Come To The Den, plays out as the two sides take the field.

12:39

GOAL UPDATE: Hartlepool United 0 Blackpool 1

Early joy for Championship club Blackpool away at League Two Hartlepool as Keshi Anderson puts them in front just eight minutes in.

12:32

Another four ties just getting underway

The atmosphere building nicely at The Den as the players complete their warm-ups. A big crowd expected today for this meeting of two clubs separated by just 7.8miles on the map.

Elsewhere, four other ties are just getting underway. Premier League Burnley are in action as they host Championship Huddersfield Town at Turf Moor.

All-Championship affairs as Coventry City play Derby County and Bristol City play Fulham, while Hartlepool United are hosting Blackpool.

12:30

GOAL UPDATE: Mansfield 0 Middlesbrough 2

Game over already at Mansfield? Middlesbrough double their lead on 14 minutes thanks to youngster Caolan Boyd-Munce.

12:28

The players warm up in the rain at The Den

Jeffrey Schlupp of Crystal Palace warming up

Luka Milivojevic of Crystal Palace warms up

12:20

GOAL UPDATE: Mansfield 0 Middlesbrough 1

It hasn’t taken too long at all for Championship Middlesbrough to assert themselves against League Two Mansfield.

Uche Ikpeazu has opened the scoring for the visitors just four minutes in.

Uche Ikpeazu of Middlesborough celebrates after scoring their sides first goal

12:18

We’re underway in the first of today’s 21 FA Cup ties

The action has started in the 12.15pm kick-off between Mansfield Town and Middlesbrough, the first of the 21 FA Cup matches taking place today.

We will of course keep you up to date with the score there.

Four more games starting at 12.30 and then Millwall vs Palace at 12.45.

12:14

We’ve already had one FA Cup tie this weekend

SWINDON TOWN 1 MANCHESTER CITY 4

A sprinkling of snow over Wiltshire in the afternoon, a downpour over Swindon Town at night. First there was one goal, then two, three and four – Pep Guardiola must have felt pretty comfy on that couch, all things considered.

If his absence with a bout of Covid made for an awkward preparation to this clash of unequals, then there the difficulties ended for Manchester City. They came here to win well and they got what they came for.

But good for Swindon – that it was only four really ought to be a source of some pride. For them and anyone these days.

Where will the FA Cup shocks come this weekend?

The FA Cup is always famed for its storylines.

Whether it is 30 years on from when Division Four Wrexham beat English champions Arsenal, when 200-1 Oldham Athletic beat Fulham or Wigan knocking off Manchester City in the final.

Ahead of the weekend’s third round ties, Sportsmail assesses each of them and looks at the likelihood of a shock…

Welcome to FA Cup third round Saturday!

We may only be eight days into 2022 but one of the best weekends of the football calendar is upon us.

The FA Cup third round, where the big guns of the Premier League rub shoulders with non-league dreamers and everyone in between.

Just look at National League leaders Chesterfield, drawn away to the reigning European champions Chelsea this evening and set to be backed at Stamford Bridge by 6,000 fans on a dream day out.

Or Yeovil Town, great giant-killers of yore, aiming to add another scalp when they host Championship pace-setters Bournemouth.
