Jamie Vardy is in line for a new deal at Leicester that would take the legendary striker into his 12th season at the club and past his 37th birthday.
The forward, who helped Leicester win the league title and the FA Cup for the first time in their history, is due to see his current contract expire at the end of the season.
But there is increasing optimism within the club that a new agreement can be reached which would see Vardy, 35, spend at least one more campaign at King Power Stadium.
Jamie Vardy is set to be given a new deal that will extend his stay at Leicester into a 12th season
Brendan Rodgers confirmed that talks had been held with Vardy and his representatives
Though boss Brendan Rodgers has admitted Vardy’s playing time will have to be managed carefully to ensure he is firing throughout the season, he still remains Leicester’s deadliest forward.
He has 11 goals in 14 appearances against Saturday’s opponents Arsenal and if he scores at Emirates Stadium, he will reach another milestone: 100 Premier League goals since turning 30.
‘He has looked good in pre-season and is continuing to work,’ said Rodgers, who confirmed there had been discussions between Vardy and the club.
Vardy, 35, was a key member of the Leicester team that won the Premier League in 2016
‘His appetite is still there. We would like to extend his stay here and that’s something the club and his representatives will look at.
‘Jamie thrives on balls into space behind the defence and if there is no space, he thrives on low crosses into the box. It is as simple as that. If we can do that more, there will be opportunities for him and other players.’
Vardy spearheaded Leicester’s historic Premier League-winning campaign in 2015-16, scoring 24 goals. He won 26 England caps but has not played for his country since the 2018 World Cup after taking a step back from the international game.
He scored 17 times last season despite being injured for a significant part of it.
