Wolves 0-1 Liverpool: Harvey Elliott’s first half wonder strike wins FA Cup third round replay to stop the rot briefly for Jurgen Klopp’s side at Molineux… though they face foes Brighton next

Jurgen Klopp must have appreciated the symbolism. After just 20 seconds, the lights went out around Molineux and plenty thought the same would happen to Liverpool’s season.

From darkness, however, Klopp saw his team emerge like a starburst, exploding with a performance full of their old characteristics. A glorious strike from Harvey Elliott means they can defend the FA Cup for another round but there was something even better than that for Liverpool’s manager.

It would be a nonsense to suggest, suddenly, electricity was surging through this team (unlike the Molineux generators) but here was a base to build from, a base formed with all the virtues Klopp adores such as lots of running, plenty of tackling and old fashioned graft.

Harvey Elliott’s first half goal proved the difference between the two sides as Liverpool advanced to the fourth round

Jurgen Klopp’s out-of-form side stopped the recent rot with a somewhat convincing 1-0 away victory at a subdued Molineux

The English midfielder was brilliant throughout as Liverpool dominated Wolves for much of the evening away from home

How Wolves will rue the way this fixture has panned out – they really were most unfortunate not to win the initial meeting on Merseyside – but Klopp won’t give past controversies another thought, as Liverpool won a cup tie at this venue for the first time since 1923.

The last three days have felt like 100 years for Klopp, who was so aghast by what he witnessed at Brighton last Saturday, but fate has handed them an immediate chance to atone for that calamity on January 29. Perhaps they are awakening from their mid-winter slumber.

Molineux will always hold a special place in Elliott’s affections as it was here as a 16-year-old, in May 2019, he became the Premier League’s then youngest player. Images of that day are in the family album and, in the 13th minute, there was another moment that needed preserving for posterity.

Everything started from a Wolves attack that broke down when Rayan Ait-Nouri tangled with Joe Gomez. The hosts felt Gomez used an arm but no infringement was spotted and, in a flash, Liverpool played their way out of trouble through goalkeeper Caoimhain Kelleher and Kostas Tsimikas.

Liverpool’s Thiago and his midfielders dominated Wolves with the hosts struggling to evade the visitors’ impressive press

Wolves players became frustrated with referee Andre Marriner over some perceived poor decisions going against them

Both sides made a number of changes for the game – with Julen Lopetegui making seven from the side that beat West Ham

Ibrahima Konate marshalled the makeshift back four throughout the night with Raul Jimenez rarely allowed a sniff

The Greek left-back fizzed a pass into Thiago Alcantara, who cushioned the ball and opened the pitch up with a body swerve. Thiago, majestic throughout, could find space in an overcrowded phone box but, for once, his contribution in finding Elliott was not the most eye-catching.

Taking possession 10 yards inside in his own half, Elliott began scuttling forward with the ball glued to his foot. The further he went, it was clear there only one thought on his mind – nudge, nudge, nudge, nudge then whack! Jose Sa was beaten all ends up from 30 yards.

‘If I was a goalie, I wouldn’t have expected him to shoot in that moment,’ said Klopp.

In the next attack, Tsimikas should have doubled their advantage but, after being teed up by Fabio Carvalho, he blazed over. Carvalho, buzzing about like a wasp, had Klopp roaring in approval when he pounced out of the shadows to disposes Dexter Lembisika. This, clearly, was more like it.

Wolves had made one fewer change (seven) than Liverpool here but they really did look like a team that had been thrown together and other than a brief flurry in the early exchanges, they couldn’t impose themselves on a visiting defence that critics suspected would crack under pressure.

Little wonder, then, that Julen Lopetegui was an arm-waving, eyes-blazing figure of fury. What was being produced here was light years away from what they had done at Anfield and Klopp’s sole grumble at the interval was that Liverpool did not have matters wrapped up.

Only a linesman’s flag prevented Carvalho putting the gloss on another slick move, with the young Portuguese failing by a fraction to time his run correctly. A 2-0 deficit, you felt, would have been too much for Wolves to retrieve, particularly with their usually influential crowd so subdued.

There was no way Lopetegui was going to allow the inertia to continue and he made two changes at the break – Lembikisa was especially relieved to escape the torment – but it didn’t make any discernible difference to the overall pattern.

Matheus Nunes, one of the changes, did at least try to provide more aggression and one tackle, under the nose of Klopp, felt significant. Liverpool are interested in this young Brazilian and made an enquiry about signing him last summer. They may try to do say again this year.

That topic is something for the future but the present is what concerns Klopp and, perhaps for the first time since the resumption of domestic matters after the World Cup, it felt like his team were in complete control, unfazed about anything that was thrown at them.

You could see how serious Klopp was taking this when he introduced Mo Salah – and promptly made him captain – midway through the second period to deliver the strike that would carry his team through to a South Coast date with Brighton.

What’s more, their attitude could not be questioned. Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez, for instance, had excellent games, a sentiment that also applied to Stefan Bajectic, who plays with a maturity beyond his 18 years. James Milner, double the young Spaniard’s age, was indefatigable.

Try as Wolves did to pilfer an equaliser, their ideas were not up to scratch and when Ruben Neves free-kick sailed over the bar in injury time, their race was run. Klopp, by contrast, will simply hope Liverpool’s race to the finish is just getting started.

Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui again showed himself to be a combustible character with a series of incidents during the game

Matheus Nunes – introduced at half-time – did try and change the direction of the game with aggressiveness but struggled

Nelson Semedo also came on and gave Wolves a better outlet from deep on the right compared to Dexter Lembikisa

Liverpool’s substitutes brought some much-needed energy for the final 15 minutes or so to see out the FA Cup tie

Mo Salah was brought on for Cody Gakpo – who still searches for his first goal for the club – midway through the second half

Liverpool’s backline and midfield worked well to keep Wolves at bay after some pressure late in the second half was exerted

Forest Green’s FA Cup upset dream was stifled by Birmingham City, who scored two goals in 15 second half minutes to overturn the deficit.

Swansea 1-1 Bristol City is currently in extra-time.

Luton piled more pressure on Kolo Toure and Wigan with a 2-1 win in Lancashire, while West Brom ended Chesterfield’s dreams with a comprehensive 4-0 victory.

21:40

FULL-TIME: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

The holders are through. Impressive the way a young side saw that victory out. Dominic King’s report is to follow shortly.

21:39

90+4: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

Wolves again, bizarrely, refuse to swing the ball in. Odd.

It allows Liverpool the opportunity to clear, which they do. When it comes back Gomez gets booked for a foul.

If it stays like this, Klopp can consider this a good night’s work. But Wolves have another attack, right at the death. For a handball against Salah.

A free-kick about 30 yards out, Neves stands over it.

21:37

90+1: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

Five minutes added on. Cunha has another chance, and should score again! This time it’s with his head, but he mistimes it all the same. He’s been good otherwise.

Wolves win a corner from their next attack but Neves refuses to swing it in, much to the chagrin of the home supporters.

Cunha again dances through, and has another attempt, which is blocked by Phillips out for a corner.

21:32

88′: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

Big chance! Costa does well to knock the ball into the path of Cunha but his attempt is wild. That was a big chance, and also a warning to Liverpool for the final knockings of this game.

21:31

84′: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

Diego Costa is introduced for Raul Jimenez. He scored twice against the Reds during his time for Chelsea. Though, Steve Bower, on commentary duty for the BBC, points out his last goal in English football came in 2017’s FA Cup final.

Wolves have four minutes to salvage something. They are knocking it around nicely and their changes, notably Cunha and Nunes, have changed the direction of the game somewhat.

Liverpool have looked more assured in their defensive structure, which will please their manager.

21:27

81′: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

Wolves come again. This their best period of the game so far. This time Ait-Nouri gets in behind Gomez, who hasn’t relished his move to right-back.

They have around eight minutes of normal time to salvage extra-time. And here comes Diego Costa…

21:24

79′: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

The corner almost leads to a Wolves counterattack in which they would have had at least a two-man advantage. Keita does well to stifle that.

Howveer, just seconds later, Wolves are allowed to break. Traore stands Tsimikas up and gets to the byline where he just about digs out a cross. Jimenez approaches it and probably should score, but his header hits the back of Gomez’s head and behind. Wolves are rightfully furious they weren’t awarded a corner.

21:21

76′: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

Good work by Harvey Elliott to win the ball back off Traore when Wolves threatened to break. Curtis Jones does well to bring it in-field and evade the press.

Fabinho plays a really good cross-field pass to Doak, which the young Scot reaches. His ball is looking for Salah but doesn’t evade Toti and Liverpool win a corner.

21:19

73′: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

Neves steps up. Just over the bar. Wolves are furious with the referee after they perceive him to have denied them a corner.

Two more changes for Liverpool. Bajcetic, who was impressive, off for Ben Doak. Fabinho on for Thiago.

21:16

71′: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

The changes for Wolves have altered the pattern of this game. Cunha is making runs at the Liverpool defence which has unsettled them. He is slipped the ball intelligently by Nunes, and his touch is equally clever, but Phillips, who loses his bearings, brings him down. Free-kick to Wolves around 23 yards out.

21:15

70′: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

Klopp will hope Salah – and his other changes – can finish this game. That said, at present Wolves look like posing no threat. Semedo, when looking for Traore, passes it straight out of play.

Wolves are extracting a bit of pressure, finally. But their final ball continues to disappoint. Cunha and Nunes are combining well. Ait-Nouri flicks it in Cunha who makes an intelligent run into the box. Liverpool get it clear.

21:10

63′: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

Has Klopp stumbled upon a functional midfield? Bajcetic, Thiago and Keita have all worked really well together. The legs in both Bajcetic make up for the lack of them in Thiago. But he makes up for it with his technical ability.

They again scythe through Wolves’ midfield and Keita slides Gakpo in. He’s eventually flagged offside. Didn’t need to go that early.

Cunha and Podence on for Moutinho and Jonny. Cody Gakpo off for Mohamed Salah as he searches for his first Liverpool goal, Carvalho for Curtis Jones and Milner for Nat Phillips.

21:06

60′: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

Chance, Wolves. Traore has to do better there. They finally get in behind Liverpool’s fullbacks, and the cut back from their left-side by Ait-Nouri finds its way to the edge of the 18-yard box. Traore meets it with plenty of time and space to set him self, but he uses neither as he blasts his left-footed effort miles over the bar.

Cunha and Podence are being prepared to enter the fray shortly. Can they bring a bit of intensity?

21:04

57′: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

Wolves have been so poor. The half-time changes haven’t injected any sort of intensity. Lopetegui will be disappointed, thus far.

Liverpool come again, this time through Tsimikas. His cross is blocked, and then it deflects back onto him and out for a goalkick.

21:01

55′: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

Salah is about to run out for a warm up. Klopp will feel his side can finish this soon, which is exactly what he wants.

Liverpool are keeping the pressure on Wolves somewhat now. They are getting crosses in, with Milner attempting the latest. The hosts head it clear, and look to then break – leading to a Thiago booking having brought down Nunes.

20:59

53′: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

Liverpool come forward again, through Keita and Thiago. The Spaniard does well to evade two tackles before sliding Keita in between the lines. His shot is weak, off-target and generally very poor. Remains 0-1.

20:55

51′: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

A brilliant, raking pass by Collins finds Ait-Nouri. His attempted ball across is blocked by Milner out for a corner to the hosts. There’s a brief moment of excitement from the crowd after the ball – they feel – hits the arm of Keita. Like the one in the first half, never, ever a penalty.

20:54

49′: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

Nunes has to move the ball quicker. He gives it away by dallying on it, allowing Konate to get up his back.

The ball is then passed forwards to Gakpo who has dropped deep. He is fouled.

20:53

48′: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

The intensity of the game as yet has not risen in level. Nunes, however, who will look to make something happen, is alongside Neves and is dropping deep to try and collect the ball.

They are looking for the combination of Semedo and Traore on the right. Their speed could hurt Liverpool.

20:51

46′: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

Collins combines with Semedo deep in their own half, with the Portuguese receiving some early touches. The ball over the top is this time targeted on the left. Liverpool put the ball out for a throw.

Moutinho is playing closer to Jimenez this half.

20:49

46′: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

Two changes for Wolves at half-time. Nelson Semedo for Lembikisa and Matheus Nunes for Hodge.

Back underway.

20:40

Results elsewhere

Here are the half-time results from tonight’s other FA Cup ties.

Forest Green 1-0 Birmingham City

Swansea 0-0 Bristol City

Wigan 0-0 Luton Town

West Brom 1-0 Chesterfield

20:34

Half-time: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

Half-time, and it’s Harvey Elliott’s goal that splits the teams. It was a brilliant strike, but probably the only bit of quality in that half.

The noises have stopped in the BBC studio, which Lineker, Ince and Murphy will be happy about.

20:32

43′: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

Half-time is drawing nearer. Both managers have a bit to ponder at the break. Lopetegui will be demanding more intensity; Klopp fewer players running offside inexplicably.

Lembikisa has a throw in on the right which he gets in behind Tsimikas for Traore to again run on to. They move it with a bit more speed and intensity than they have otherwise. The cross is attempted, but Milner blocks.

They try to recycle it, but it ends with a goal kick for Liverpool. Wolves have really not been good.

Two minutes added on at the end of the first period.

20:29

42′: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

A brilliant pass from Kelleher, a superb touch and run by Tsimikas which takes him in field brings the first yellow card of the game, dished out to Traore. There are some murmurs of discontent from the crowd, but they will know deep down that there are no doubts over that decision.

20:26

40′: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

Case of Gakpo not quite being on the same wavelength as his team-mates, as he comes short to receive it when there’s acres of green grass in behind. Keita presumes he’ll make the right run and the ball ends up back with Wolves.

The ball is then flinged over the top by Toti for Traore whose speed sees him burn past Tsimikas. His shot is wide.

20:24

36′: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

Liverpool are controlling this game superbly. Harvey Elliott and Thiago have combined really well in midfield, and Wolves cannot get near them.

Tighter runs from their forwards, just delaying them by that split second more will surely see them put this game beyond the hosts.

20:22

34′: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

Another Gakpo effort which flies over the bar and massively wide. As yet, he hasn’t brought his shooting boots. At least he is getting into the positions, though. Etc etc.

It is extremely flat out there. Both sides need a spark. Will Lopetegui throw Diego Costa on to torment Liverpool once again?

Liverpool, and Carvalho, have the ball in the net. The youngster has run five yards offside. Keita could, and should, have released him sooner.

20:19

30′: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

The free-kick causes a bit of panic before Konate gives away a free-kick for a push on Neves.

The centre-back pairing of Collins and Toti are struggling to deal with runners either side of them, with their full-backs not doing enormous amounts to help them.

Gakpo has another effort, which flies just off target.

We mentioned earlier how Liverpool’s press had collapsed this season, but it works there. Gakpo leads it as they force Neves back into the box. He lays it off to Sa who can only turn it around the byline, deliberately. Fortunately for the Portuguese pair the Liverpool corner comes to nothing.

20:16

27′: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

Wolves have a free-kick on the right which comes to nothing after a poor delivery. They already look out of ideas and slower to every second ball. Thiago is running the show out there.

Milner receives it off his team-mate Thiago and uses all of his experience to win a foul off Ait-Nouri, who should really be more aware of what the veteran was trying to do.

20:12

The route of the odd noises prior to the game…
20:11

22′: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

Liverpool have a free-kick about 30 yards from goal which Milner looks to be shaping up to hit. Instead, they go for one off the training ground with Thiago looking to chip it over the top for Konate.

They continue to come forward and have Wolves under some significant pressure. Gakpo finds Keita in the box with a nice pass, but the midfielder’s touch is poor and it takes him too wide. Wolves get out by launching it long for Jimenez. He extols some of his previous ability as a target man to hold it up and draw a foul. A bit of respite.

20:07

20′: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

Harvey Elliott celebrates his fifth goal for Liverpool. That is the difference so far.

Wolves supporters are not happy after Toti is adjudged to have fouled Carvalho.

Wolves are pressing high and trying to force Liverpool into a mistake, but the visitors look increasingly settled and sure of themselves. The first 20 minutes of this will have given Klopp encouragement after Saturday’s dismal showing.

20:04

16′: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

VAR is back. Tsimikas fouls Traore. He’s having a bit of a torrid time up against the Spaniard.

Free-kick to the hosts about 40 yards from goal with Moutinho standing over it. He looks for Traore, again. He must have had 40 or so touches by now.

Moutinho receives it back but his cross is straight into the arms of Kelleher.

20:03

14′: Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

That goal has instilled some belief in both the Liverpool players and supporters. You can only hear their away end.

Lopetegui is not happy about something, he’s screaming in the fourth official’s ear. It appears as though it’s about the lack of VAR overturning on Ait-Nouri’s shot striking Gomez’s arm. Never, ever a penalty.

19:59

GOAL LIVERPOOL ELLIOTT 0-1

Harvey Elliott. What a brilliant strike. Wolves have a chance up the other end with Ait-Nouri, but a combination of Gomez and Konate cutting it out.

It’s passed forwards to Elliott who is allowed to run 20 yards. He has options either side, but opts to go himself. He almost catches Sa out with his left-footed effort, which flies into the keepers’ near side. 1-0 Liverpool.

19:57

10′: Wolves 0-0 Liverpool

It is certainly not the most febrile atmosphere out there tonight. Perhaps it’s down to the sub-zero temperatures.

Gakpo is trying to press, but with few of his team-mates following him, Wolves are able to get out and play. Collins finds Moutinho in midfield before Neves’ touch is heavy and Liverpool are able to punt it back into the hosts’ defensive third.

19:55

7′: Wolves 0-0 Liverpool

Tsimikas has not had a good start. He’s given it away twice and is clearly being targeted by the hosts.

That said, Liverpool get forward in their first attack. Milner’s cross ends up in the hands of Sa.

Some good pressing by Thiago gets it back, and it’s passed to Gakpo. He has an attempt from about 20 yards but it’s weak and Sa barely has to bend down to claim it.

19:52

5′: Wolves 0-0 Liverpool

The hosts’ continue with their pressure and win another corner after some smart work from Toti and Moutinho. The Portuguese swings it in, but it’s headed clear.

It comes back but it ends up in the hands of Kelleher in the Liverpool goal. They then get it down to enjoy some much-needed early touches. Bajectic drops deep to get a feel for the ball.

19:51

4′: Wolves 0-0 Liverpool

It has been all the hosts so far, Liverpool have barely touched it. Related to the same power cut that briefly saw the floodlights go out, the VAR screens have also gone out. Some – including Alan Shearer – might feel that is no bad thing.

19:49

2′: Wolves 0-0 Liverpool

Wolves are targeting Traore with their passes, with Tsimikas having allowed the ball drift over his head three times already. The latest attempt sees the ex-Barcelona man dig a cross out which is headed wide by Jimenez.

19:48

1′: Wolves 0-0 Liverpool

The floodlights have just gone out, very briefly. Will Marriner get his light meter out? Wrong sport.

It is all happening tonight and we’re only a minute in. Wolves are making the argument they had the ball when they went out. Liverpool are given it, however.

19:46

Kick-off: Wolves 0-0 Liverpool

Wolves, looking to win back-to-back home games for the first time in 12 months, get us underway.

19:44

Here come the teams

Gary Lineker seems very relieved to have handed the reigns over to Steve Bower to stop that 15 minute embarrassment.

The teams are out and kick-off is imminent.

19:42

Five minutes to go

Can Liverpool continue their pursuit for a fifth FA Cup triumph, a first since 1960? Or will Liverpool look to add to their eight – as they look to become the first side since Arsenal in 2015 to retain the trophy?

Arsenal love proving their doubters wrong and Man United have made huge progress, but Liverpool look a shadow of their former selves – CHRIS SUTTON gives all 20 Premier League sides a HALF-TIME TEAM TALK as the season reaches the halfway stage

Some pre-match reading

Everyone got their oranges? Good. It would not be a half-time team talk without those.

Most of the Premier League’s clubs have played 19 games. That means there are 19 to go and we have a big second half ahead.

Sportsmail asked me to deliver a team talk to each club. There will not be any Neil Warnock effing and blinding. But maybe I’ll go full Mike Bassett: England Manager and throw in words of wisdom from a few literary greats. So with my copy of Roger Hargreaves’s Mr Men by my side, here goes.

Bristol City – Swansea City team news

Seven changes for Swansea from the weekend; none Nigel Pearson’s Bristol City.

Bristol City XI: O’Leary, Pring, Vyner, Atkinson, Tanner, Naismith, Scott, Wells, James, Sykes, Semenyo.

Subs: Bentley, Dasilva, Williams, King, Kadji, Bell, Taylor-Clarke.

Liverpool’s dressing room

There should be plenty on Liverpool’s bench to change the game should they find themselves in trouble tonight. Mohamed Salah, for one. Though, he is not exactly in form.

18:59

Changes by both managers a sure sign of where priorities lie

Neither manager wanted a replay tonight, that is clear in as much as their team selections suggest so.

Across both teams, 15 changes from the sides that were put out over the weekend.

Klopp will be hoping his rather makeshift back four can defend a bit better than the one did on the weekend. He has also called on the rest of the team to aid his defenders, saying they are making the pitch too big when defending. There is air of Klopp’s last days with Borussia Dortmund about that fact – once the pressing system dies in that sense, it is very hard to recover. Not that he would publicly admit as much.

‘We have to be more compact,’ Klopp said.

‘The pitch looks too big when we are defending. You have to go back to basics and from there you can make steps.

‘We have to do some things slightly different and some things the same. All the success in football starts with solid defending and that’s what we have to do again.’

18:48

TEAM NEWS

A quite significant number of changes from Klopp from the team that lost at the weekend. Eight in total. Lopetegui makes seven. It is clear where priorities lie.

Wolves: Sa; Lembikisa, Collins, Toti, Jonny; Hodge, Neves, Moutinho; Traore, Ait-Nouri, Jimenez

Liverpool: Kelleher; Milner, Gomez, Konate, Tsimikas; Bajcetic, Thiago, Keita; Elliot, Carvalho, Gakpo.

Jurgen Klopp vows to make changes at Liverpool this summer but insists his departure from the club will NOT be one of them… as the Reds boss hits back at claims that he is ‘too loyal’ to his players

Klopp this week fired back at some of the criticism he’s recently received off the back of his team’s poor performances.

Jurgen Klopp has vowed there will be a summer of change at Anfield – but his departure from Liverpool will not be one of them.

Liverpool face Wolves in an FA Cup third round replay on Tuesday and the tie has assumed huge significance on the back of a 3-0 defeat to Brighton – who await the winners in round four – which Klopp described as the worst of his managerial career.

The German was in the mood to talk yesterday and, in what felt like a significant press conference, Klopp defended himself against criticism he is too loyal to players, insisted his squad are still listening to his message but admitted that Liverpool have lost the element of surprise to their game.

What the managers have said

‘They are one of the best teams in the world,’ Lopetegui said of his side’s opponents yesterday.

‘The quality of players, the coach, his history. I am sure they’re going to come here and look to do a big match.

‘The FA Cup is going to be an important aim for them and we have to fight to overcome them.’

Asked about potential new arrivals this month, the Spaniard remained tight-lipped but admitted that the club were looking around.

‘We will see,’ he said. ‘It’s true we have interest in some players, but when they are here and our players we can talk about them, and not before.’

18:31

What the managers have said

Jurgen Klopp appears to have calmed down a bit following Saturday’s defeat. Time is a great healer and all that.

Losing a game in the way we lost it is already bad enough, but then facing all of you doesn’t make life better, to be honest! Not because the questions were especially bad or whatever – I understand all the questions, really – but just because directly after something like this, being in a situation [where] you give answers, is really, really difficult – believe me,’ he said.

‘Especially the answers people want to hear. Of course, two days after now, everything looks different. It doesn’t make the game better but obviously the next game is waiting, and that’s the good thing in our life that there’s always the next chance.

‘That’s what we are preparing for. The issues we had in that game were obvious and I explained it already, parts of it at least after, that we try to find a different organisation and that didn’t work out. In the end, it was not executed well enough, definitely, but there might be a reason for it that we didn’t explain it well enough. That’s it.’

18:30

Wolves resurgent under Lopetegui

When Julen Lopetegui was finally hired by Wolves on November 5, they sat 19th in the Premier League with a measly 10 points from their 14 games to that point. They had only scored eight goals – while they had already lost that many.

Two months on, and the picture is looking a lot rosier for Lopetegui’s side. They are now outside the drop zone on 17 points and their goal tally as swollen somewhat. There is clearly still work to do, but the performances have been much improved. Including away at Liverpool in the first attempted go at this tie.

18:21

Klopp has called for the abandoning of replays

In a not very surprising development prior to the first tie, Jurgen Klopp called for the abandonment of the Cup replay.

Klopp, who has made little secret of his dismay at the number of games in the English football calendar since his arrival in 2015, said that a solution needed to be found.

‘Yes, I was always [in favour of scrapping replays],’ he said.

‘The lifelines for small clubs cannot be massive problems for clubs who play every three days,’ he added. ‘We cannot solve all the problems by playing more games.

‘I know there is money involved and that’s how it is but you have to find solutions.

‘Nobody wants to kill the smaller clubs; they have exactly the same right for existence as all of us.’

Other FA Cup fixtures taking place tonight

Elsewhere this evening, there are five more FA Cup games taking place.

Boreham Wood, who secured a 1-1 draw at home a week and a half ago, travel to Accrington Stanley looking to repeat last year’s Cup run.

Forest Green host Birmingham City – though this is not a replay with the original tie having been postponed owing to a waterlogged pitch. It will go to a replay if drawn this evening.

Swansea host rivals Bristol City after their 1-1 draw first time around.

While Luton travel to Championship strugglers Wigan after also drawing 1-1 in the original tie.

Chesterfield, who almost produced the shock of the round only to be denied by a last-gasp West Brom equaliser in a thrilling 3-3 draw, head to the Midlands this evening looking to try and record the upset.

Good evening

Hello and welcome to tonight’s live coverage of Wolves vs. Liverpool as well as updates from the other FA Cup replays taking place tonight.

Liverpool’s tie with Wolves at the beginning of this month threw up plenty of controversy, including a late disallowed goal that it later emerged VAR was not able to adjudicate upon because the cameras weren’t able to catch it!

As it is, that night finished 2-2 and we are at Molineux this evening where one of these two sides – be it in normal time, extra time or on penalties – will be exiting the FA Cup tonight.

A lot has been written and said about Liverpool’s form this season, with the club ailing some 10 points outside of the top four places and a further 19 back from the summit of the Premier League.

After their latest defeat on Saturday, where they went down 3-0 to Brighton on the south-coast, Jurgen Klopp said he struggled to remember a worse performance. Jordan Henderson also admitted the squad were suffering from a crisis of confidence.
