A second string West Brom side powered past National League outfit Chesterfield to book their place in the fourth-round of the FA Cup.

The Championship promotion chasers proved too strong for the Spireites, with John Swift netting after 23 minutes before second half goals from Tom Rogic, Jake Livermore and Jovan Malcolm secured a 4-0 victory.

But West Brom boss Carlos Corberan admitted an added time injury to substitute Matt Phillips put a dampener on the evening.

West Bromwich Albion triumphed 4-0 against Chesterfield in their FA Cup clash on Tuesday

‘The best thing was the result, the worst thing was the injury to Phillips,’ Corberan said. ‘Today we had the opportunity to solve what we didn’t do in the previous game. It was very important for me to keep going in the Cup.’

There was a feeling of bitterness for Chesterfield, who had been seconds away from progressing to the fourth round before Brandan Thomas-Asante headed in a 93rd minute equaliser for the Baggies in the game at the Technique Stadium.

The striker, though, should have been sent off for an elbow on Jeff King two minutes before the goal. He was handed a retrospective three-game ban but it was of little comfort to Paul Cook’s team.

As a result, Carlos Corberan’s side have booked a place in the fourth round of the FA Cup

It was John Swift who opened the scoring for West Brom in the 23rd minute of the contest

‘After you don’t beat a team like West Brom in the first game, the replay is always going to be tough,’ assistant boss Danny Webb said. ‘It’s a bit of a sickener that we’ve given away four poor goals.’

Ten changes to the Baggies side that beat Luton and a debut for 20-year-old Jamie Andrews indicated that Corberan’s priorities lie with the league.

But unlike their near exit at the Technique Stadium a fortnight ago, his team were on the front foot from kick-off and their pressure told when John Swift, the only man to retain his place from the previous game, netted the opener mid-way through the first half.

A poor clearance from Chesterfield’s Jamie Grimes fell to Jake Livermore, who headed the ball down for Swift to take one touch before curling a fine shot into the left-hand side of the net.

Rogic scored his side’s second goal of the game during the FA Cup third round replay match

Grady Diangana should have made it 2-0 when he found himself 1v1 with Lucas Covolan, but the Chesterfield goalkeeper spread himself well to make an important save.

Covolan’s stop mattered little though as a dreadful error from Jeff King gifted the Baggies a second just after half-time. The defender should have been able to clear Adam Reach’s cross with ease but for unknown reasons attempted a backheel in his own box. The ball fell to a grateful Rogic, who poked the ball into the top right corner past a helpless Covolan.

A third came when Swift’s corner fell at the feet of Livermore, who smashed the ball into the roof of the net from close range. Chesterfield improved and should have had a consolation goal but it was the hosts who found the net again, with Jovan Malcolm heading in a fourth in added time.

Midfielder Jake Livermore extended West Brom’s lead in the 54th minute of the FA Cup clash

Jovan Malcolm was the fourth and final person to score during the replay on Tuesday evening
