‘Shocking decisions, week after week’: Fans fume on social media after Liverpool keeper Caoimhin Kelleher is only given a yellow card for reckless studs-up challenge in FA Cup clash with Cardiff… with Reds going on to score just minutes later

Fans took to social media to vent their frustration at the decision to not send off Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher for reckless challenge against Cardiff.

The Reds progressed to the fifth round of the FA Cup as goals from Diogo Jota, Takumi Minamino and Harvey Elliott saw them win 3-1 at Anfield.

With the scored tied at 0-0, the game could have taken a turn for the worse for Liverpool just seconds into the second-half.

The replays showed Caoimhin Kelleher’s studs were high when he challenged for the ball

But the Liverpool keeper got away with just a yellow as the Cardiff players protested for a red

The Liverpool defence was caught out by a ball which was played towards Mark Harris, who looked set to run on goal.

But Kelleher travelled a long distance to come out of his box and clear the ball away, bringing down Harris in the process.

On replay, he looked to have had  his studs up as he caught the striker’s achilles. But Kelleher got away with just a booking despite the Cardiff players appealing for a red instead.

Fans took it to Twitter to react. One Tweeted: ‘Those referees are so corrupt. He is the last man and clearly foul him. Should given red but they favour Liverpool. Shocking decisions week after week with no responsibility and measures against those referees.’

Another simply said: ‘Absolutely (a red card), but it’s Liverpool soo.’

A third fans thought things might’ve been different if the roles were reversed. He Tweeted: ‘If it had come from the Cardiff, it will have earned TWO red cards, but it is LiVARpool.’

Ian Wright thought the referee made the wrong decision and should’ve sent off Kelleher based on the tackle and not whether it was a clear goal-scoring opportunity.

Roy Keane believes Kelleher was lucky to get away with a yellow and could’ve caused an injury

Speaking on ITV, he said: ‘I don’t think it was an obvious goal scoring possibility simply because Konate probably gets round but I think they must have been looking at the challenge itself. I think the challenge he probably could have gone for.

‘We were saying if he got sent off for that we would probably say yeah. He has caught him that’s pretty high.’

Fellow pundit Roy Keane agreed as he said: He’s (Kelleher) not in control is he. He got very, very lucky with the sending off and could have obviously been a bad injury there. Very lucky. He has got the benefit of the doubt, sometimes the home team gets it but very lucky.
