Sheffield Wednesday 1-1 Fleetwood Town: Josh Earl’s own goal cancels out Promise Omochere’s opener as familiar League One opponents head for a FA Cup fourth round replay

If familiarity really does breed contempt, then these two sides will be sick of the sight of each other when this FA Cup tie is decided.

The League One rivals must meet for the fourth time in little over a month after they could not be separated at a largely frustrated Hillsborough.

Promise Omochere’s delightful diving header put Fleetwood ahead early in the 52nd minute and raised hopes of a famous win for the Lancashire outfit in the first-ever fourth-round encounter.

Sheffield Wednesday avoided defeat courtesy of an own goal in the second-half

The 22-year-old striker connected sweetly with Danny Andrew’s low left-wing cross and celebrated wildly in front of the travelling Cod Army.

Yet Wednesday drew level in the 71st minute when Fleetwood defender Joshua Earl diverted Marvin Johnson’s left-wing cross through his own net under pressure from Owls frontman Mallik Wilks.

‘We did enough to win the game, but we’re still in the tie.’

Escaping the third tier is Wednesday’s priority this season and they could not make their first-half dominance pay as half chances came and went.

Fleetwood head coach Scott Brown will now entertain Sheffield in a fourth round replay

Sheffield Wednesday manager Darren Moore couldn’t guide his side past their League One opponentS

Fleetwood then hit them with a deadly sucker-punch early in the second half through Omochere’s predatory header.

After Earl’s own-goal, the Owls pushed hard for a winner as Lee Gregory headed over before fellow substitute Barry Bannan’s fierce shot drew a fine block by Scott Robertson.

Gregory nodded onto the crossbar late on during nine minutes of added time.

The draw means the two sides will now entertain a fourth round replay at Fleetwood

Fleetwood boss Scott Brown lashed out at referee Charles Breakspear, saying: ‘It was a great performance by my lads, especially when the referee had a terrible performance.

‘The crowd got the better of him, but we’re in the draw and we know what Wednesday are all about.’
