Ryan Reynolds hands BBC pundits a Wrexham shirt before his side take on Sheffield United in the FA Cup… and expresses his aim is to ‘reach the Premier League’ with the Welsh club

Ryan Reynolds handed Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Mark Hughes a Wrexham shirt before the Welsh side’s game against Sheffield United.

Wrexham hosted United in the fourth round of the competition on Sunday and Hollywood star Reynolds, co-owner of the club, was in attendance.

He spoke on air before the game, in which Wrexham were trying to upset a side three divisions above them.

Wrexham took on Sheffield United in the FA Cup fourth round in Wales in front of a sold-out crowd

Reynolds, alongside fellow actor Rob McElhenney, bought the club for £2million in 2021

Reynolds co-owns the club with fellow actor Rob McElhenney having purchased it for £2million in 2021, and has breathed new life into the club.

They have struggled to get out of the National League for several years, but currently top the division and are favourites for promotion this season.

Reynolds flew over to Wales for the game, expressing his love for the club and how his aim is to get the club to the Premier League.

‘I’m standing amongst legends here!’ Reynolds said, speaking on BBC.

‘It has been the greatest experience of my entire life, not withstanding my family. It’s going to be multi decade project, and everything it entails is just magic. We wanted to get involved.

Reynolds then went on air to talk about his aspirations for the club in the long-term future

He explained his plans were ‘to reach the Premier League’ if it is ‘theoretically possible’

‘We looked at a bunch of different clubs but Wrexham just spoke to us, the club was already perfect, it just needed a bit of awareness. We’re not here to make decisions on the pitch. I look at this place like a church. It’s got a special place in my heart, and it’s spreading across the world.

‘The plan is to get to the Premier League, If it’s theoretically possible then why not? That is the goal. Realistically the fact that we’re in this church, if I were Sheffield United, I’d be taking this game very seriously.’

A television series ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ has gone global and highlighted the impact Reynolds and McElhenney have had on the club.

Reynolds, who was spotted on camera speaking to his partner, who stayed in the States, discussed the numbers his side are starting to have world wide.

‘We sold 24,000 jerseys this year’, he said. ‘So many went to North America and Canada. It’s been amazing. The reception overseas has been the most surprising thing. The part that I find most gratifying is the support from outside the club, Wrexham has become a tourist destination.

‘I’m pacing around like a caged lion. This is an extraordinary day. It’s a classic David versus Goliath story. This is football, anything can happen. I think there is a chance that Sheffield United pulls off a miracle today.

Mark Hughes, a former Welsh international, echoed the actor’s views.

He said: ‘The impact the guys have had since they came in has been phenomenal. I’m a Wrexham boy, I’m from down the road, and everyone has been talking about it, everyone’s delighted.’
