Nottingham Forest 0-1 Liverpool: Late Diogo Jota breakthrough sets up an epic FA Cup semi-final clash against Manchester City as Jurgen Klopp’s men fight their way past Steve Cooper’s gritty side

Outside the City Ground before kick-off, Nottingham Forest supporters queued up for photographs with the FA Cup.

It turns out that is as close this famous old club will get to it for the time being but Forest from the Championship certainly pushed Liverpool to their limits on yet another fabulous afternoon by the Trent.

Steve Cooper’s admirable and tenacious Nottingham Forest team had already slain Premier League opposition here this season in the form of Arsenal and Leicester City. Only the narrowest of margins ensured Liverpool did not follow those teams out of the competition. Jurgen Klopp’s team will now face Manchester City glamour semi-final at Wembley as they continue a pursuit of four trophies and in a strange way the challenges they face that day will no greater than those they faces here, just different.

The statistics will show that Liverpool had most of the ball on Sunday and most of the chances. That is true. However, the really big moments – the ones that decided this game – came in a flurry at the end and frankly this was a result that could easily have fallen the direction of the underdog from the league below.

Kopp rested players here and that was a gamble. No Mo Salah and no Sadio Mane, for example. Neither player was even on the bench. And it was a reliable understudy, Diogo Jota who poked in the winning goal from a superb Kostas Tsimikas cross with 12 minutes of normal time to play.

Either side of that, though, came moments that will live a while in the memory of those who were here.

First, two minutes before Jota’s goal, the Dane Philip Zinckernagel missed just as good a chance at the other end. Had he scored, Liverpool would have had precious little time in which to find a way back.

Then, as Forest chased parity with some gusto late on, Ryan Yates failed to beat Alisson Becker with a header just when it seemed he ought to. There was a penalty appeal, rightly turned down, amid all the drama, too, which meant that by the time Klopp and his players reached full-time, they were more than ready to get home.

Klopp’s decision to leave important players at home was vindicated by swathes of first half possession and territory, if not by a goal.

Forest, brave and ambitious, were keen to get at a Liverpool back four with only one regular member in it and when they did make progress they were dangerous. Such was Liverpool’s dominance of the ball, however, much of the home team’s best work came on the break.

Philip Zinckernagel missed a massive opportunity for Forest just before Jota scored

Ryan Yates felt he should have had a penalty after being clipped by Alisson in the final stages

MARK CLATTENBURG: Never a penalty, Yates was looking for contact

Watching live, I agreed with referee Craig Pawson that this wasn’t worthy of a penalty. Then the television replays confirmed it wasn’t.

VAR Andrew Madley saw how Nottingham Forest’s Ryan Yates was looking for the penalty. Alisson raced out to make the block and Yates could easily have stepped over his arm as he knocked the ball beyond the Liverpool goalkeeper. Instead, he made an action that ensured there was contact.

If Alisson had lifted his arm and tripped Yates, that would have been a different story. But he didn’t and, as angry as Forest were, it was right that they were not gifted a way back into this FA Cup quarter-final.

Forest had already beaten Arsenal and Leicester here in previous rounds and will have watched the tapes. What neither Premier League team did was start quickly and Liverpool seemed determined not to be like that.

The team from the Championship actually fashioned the game’s first half chance, central midfield player James Garner not able to control his shot when opportunity presented itself at the far post. After that, Liverpool managed to take more of a grip of the play.

Twice Liverpool players ran clear on goal in the opening half an hour. First Diogo Jota did so in the tenth minute only to be tackled by Forest captain Joe Worrall and then, in the 28th minute, Roberto Firmino also ambled through on goal after a slip by James Colback only to fail with an ambitious chip over Ethan Horvath when the goalkeeper gambled on staying tall. Jota, free to Firmino’s right, will have wondered why he didn’t receive a pass.

There were other moments of promise for Liverpool but they were the two clearest chances of the first half. Joe Gomez – starting at right-back – drove a long range shot straight at Horvath while from the other side Kostas Tsimikas lashed one over from distance as he sought his first goal for the club.

Much of Liverpool’s play was neat. A sharp corner to the near post gave Fabinho a chance that he stabbed wide while a smart dummy on the penalty box from Jota would have lucked a hell of a lot smarter had their actually been a Liverpool player standing behind him.

That was typical of how much of the half went. Forest were stout and unfussy across the back, demanding that Liverpool conjure something clever to cut through. At the other end, meanwhile, Forest were genuinely dangerous whenever they did flow forward.

Roberto Firmino missed a golden chance as Liverpool were frustrated in the first half

Cooper had obviously told his players to break in numbers when they could and at times they did create overlaps and situations that stretched Liverpool. Garner’s midfield partner Ryan Yates had a shot deflected wide from the edge of the area after one such counter attack on the quarter hour and when the corner was cleared Garner himself fizzed an effort of his own over the bar on the run.

Later Yates was narrowly wide with his left foot after cutting in from the right and around this time wide player Joe Lolley did Naby Keita beautifully with a side step by the near touchline.

There was life in this tie from the moment it started and it was clear just what three successive home wins in this competition had done for Forest’s belief.

None of that altered much of the way the game flowed in the second half. Liverpool were find it increasingly difficult to create real chances, though, and only Jota and then Gomez, with a mishit cross saved high at the near post, had worked Horvath before Klopp made a quartet of changes with a little more than 25 minutes of normal time to run.

Jordan Henderson was one of four substitutes to come on as Liverpool pushed for a winner

Thiago Alcantara, Jordan Henderson, Takumi Minamino and the dangerous new signing Luis Diaz were the players who arrived to freshen up the visiting team and that spoke volumes for the way Klopp feared the contest may be going.

Forest had still not registered a shot on target with 20 minutes to go – Liverpool had six by this time – but that did not mean they were not fully in this game. They left it late against Arsenal in the third round for example when one goal proved to be enough.

Then, with just under 14 minutes left and two minutes before Liverpool’s goal, Forest’s big moment of the game arrived. Liverpool lost possession carelessly in centre field and when Ryan Yates fed Brennan Johnson down the right, his cross found Zinckernagel arriving in the area. The Forest player only had Alisson in the Liverpool goal to beat but could only push his shot across the keeper and wide.

It would have been a carbon copy of the goal that had done for Arsenal back in January but was not to be. Instead, Forest were behind almost immediately.

Jurgen Klopp was delighted at the final whistle as his side moved into the FA Cup semi-finals

Forest boss Steve Cooper can be proud of his players after they pushed Liverpool all the way

The cross that fed Jota from the left was from Tsimikas but still the Portuguese player had much to do on the stretch. Jota is a natural scorer of goals, though, and here he was up to the task. After a VAR check for offside, Liverpool had the lead and a little over 12 minutes to hang on.

Forest did scare them with five minutes left when Yates ran through and went down under a challenge from Alisson. Had he stayed down, he may have had a chance of a penalty. But he sprang back to his feet and that perhaps indicated that he himself knew he had not been touched.

Still Forest came at Liverpool late in the game. Not a soul left this stadium as the underdog sought late parity. Cooper’s team had their moments, too. A header from Yates flew straight at Alisson when he may have scored and then substitute Cafu drove a half volley over from an angle.

Liverpool break forward and Jota has time but he shoots way over. Time looks to be up for Forest.

19:51

90+5 – 30 seconds to go…

Can Forest muster one last attack?

19:50

90+3 – Cafu shoots over

Lovely ball over the top and Cafu is just onside. He brings it down well enough but his shot flies over and wide.

Was that Forest’s last chance?

19:48

90+1 – Another change for Forest

Silva comes on for Colback.

19:47

90 min – Five minutes added on

We will have five minutes of added time. Still time for Forest to get another chance.

19:46

90 min – Tsimikas down

Tsimikas needs treatment, although this may just be fatigue. The seconds are ticking down…

19:46

89 min – Yates heads straight at Alisson

Johnson does well to hold off Tsimikas and he crosses to Yates. He probably gets up a bit too early and his header is weak. No trouble for Alisson.

19:44

87 min – Van Dijk goes down

Van Dijk takes a blow to the face after going up for an aerial duel with Cafu.

He checks for blood but there doesn’t appear to be any and it looks like he will continue.

19:42

86 min – No penalty

Yates stayed on his feet and that has probably counted against him. Liverpool may have got away with one there as VAR decides not to award a penalty.

19:42

85 min – Huge penalty appeal for Forest

Forest want a penalty after Alisson flicks Yates’ left boot. Will this be given?

19:39

83 min – Forest free-kick cleared

Forest win a free-kick in a good crossing position but the ball in isn’t good enough and Liverpool clear their lines.

19:38

81 min – Firmino wants a penalty

Firmino complains that he is being held in the box. VAR briefly checks, but decides that there is not enough contact.

19:35

79 min – Goal stands

It was so close but Jota is just onside, and Liverpool are in front.

19:35

78 min – Jota scores

Two minutes ago they could have led. Now Forest are behind.

Tsimikas puts in a brilliant cross and Jota just gets a toe on it to poke it home.

VAR will check this for offside.

19:34

77 min – Double change for Forest

Zinckernagel and Davis go off. They are replaced by Surridge and Mighten.

19:33

76 min – Huge chance for Zinckernagel

Wow, what a moment for Forest!

Van Dijk is caught out of position and the ball is squared to Zinckernagel. From six yards out he doesn’t make the right connection, and his shot goes inches wide.

19:31

74 min – Forest fans urging their team on

Forest are continuing to battle and have made Liverpool panic at the back at times in the last few minutes.

The fans are right behind them and are creating a great atmosphere at the City Ground.

19:27

70 min – Diaz goes down easily inside the box

Diaz wants a penalty after being put under pressure by Worrall. He was never going to get it and he gets up with a wry smile.

19:25

69 min – Forest giving as good as they get

Forest are still pushing for a goal, with Davis holding the ball up well to bring Spence into play. Just over 20 minutes to go.

19:24

67 min – Firmino misplaces through ball for Diaz

Forest give the ball away and Firmino tries to pick out Diaz who has made a run through the middle but his pass is just too heavy.

19:21

65 min – Lolley goes off

Forest also make their first change as Lolley comes off for Cafu.

19:20

64 min – Quadruple substitution for Liverpool

Liverpool make four changes as Henderson, Diaz, Thiago and Minamino come on for Oxlade-Chamberlain, Fabinho, Elliott and Keita.

19:19

62 min – Gomez puts in important challenge

A ball over the top looks to briefly catch out Liverpool but Gomez comes across quickly to snuff out the danger.

19:16

60 min – Gomez booked

Johnson takes on Gomez and the Liverpool defender brings him down. He picks up a booking.

19:16

59 min – Gomez volley held by Horvath

Elliott’s cross is blocked and Gomez tries to squeeze a volley in at the near post but Horvath is alert to the danger and holds on to his effort.

19:13

57 min – Yates down

A corner comes in and Yates collides with his goalkeeper. He is down briefly, but able to get back to his feet after a few moments.

19:10

53 min – Horvath saves from Jota and Oxlade-Chamberlain

Forest try to play out from the back but Keita wins the ball back.

The ball finds its way to Jota but his shot is tame and straight at Horvath. Oxlade-Chamberlain tries his luck moments later but his shot is also easy work for Horvath.

19:08

52 min – Forest waste a corner

Spence wins a corner but the delivery fails to beat the first man.

The crosses need to be better if Forest are going to pull off an upset here.

19:06

49 min – Moment of panic at the back for Liverpool

Forest press very high and almost catch Liverpool out as the ball falls to Davis. Once again, he is just offside.

19:05

48 min – Davis offside

Nothing wrong with the ball in but Davis has just crept offside.

19:04

47 min – Spence is brought down by Tsimikas

Free-kick here in a decent crossing position for Forest as Spence is fouled by Tsimikas…

19:01

The second half begins…

Forest get us back underway…

18:59

Can Forest keep it going for another 45 minutes?

The hosts have given a very good account of themselves so far. Can they replicate that performance in the second half?

18:49

Firmino misses the best chance of the half

Firmino had the best chance of the half as he blew a 1 v 1 opportunity and then couldn’t head home the rebound. Could that prove costly for Liverpool?

Roberto Firmino is denied by Ethan Horvath after going through on goal for Liverpool

18:45

Half time

No added time and it is goalless at half time.

18:43

43 min – Gomez volleys over

Tsimikas over-hits his cross but Elliott makes something of it as he guides the ball back into Gomez’s path.

The ball is bouncing awkwardly and Gomez’s shot flies well over.

18:42

41 min – Liverpool starting to take control

Forest just struggling to get their foot on the ball in the last few minutes.

They will be desperate to see this out until half time to allow them to re-group.

18:37

36 min – Tsimikas wastes promising position

Lovely cross-field pass by Fabinho and Jota heads the ball into the path of Tsimikas.

He could perhaps hit it first time but he opts to try to control the ball and it trickles behind for a goal kick.

18:34

33 min – Forest putting in a huge effort

Forest aren’t just sitting back here.

They still look to carry a threat on the break, particularly through Lolley on the right.

18:28

28 min – Horvath denies Firmino

Best chance of the game so far.

Firmino is in after Colback gives the ball away and he has all the time in the world. His finish is a little casual and Horvath sticks an arm out to parry it away.

18:26

25 min – Spence takes on van Dijk

The fearlessness of youth as Spence runs at van Dijk. Like many before him, he comes off second best.

18:25

24 min – Garner tracks Oxlade-Chamberlain well

It looks like a dangerous opportunity as Oxlade-Chamberlain breaks forward with the ball. However, Garner chases him back all the way and holds the Liverpool man up.

18:22

22 min – Lolley shoots wide

Good work from Forest as they break quickly.

Lolley cuts inside and fancies a go from just outside the area but he drags his effort wide.

18:19

19 min – Fabinho shoots wide

Oxlade-Chamberlain plays a clever corner in and Fabinho has pulled away from his man.

He’s under a little pressure but he should have done better as he scuffs his shot well wide.

18:17

17 min – Gomez shot easily saved by Horvath

The ball drops for Gomez on the edge of the area.

He tries a shot with his weaker left foot but it’s straight at Horvath who claims it easily.

18:15

15 min – Garner shoots over

Forest aren’t afraid to try their luck from distance.

This time it falls to Garner, but with the ball bouncing he can’t keep it down and it goes comfortably over the bar.

18:14

14 min – Tsimikas shoots just over

Firmino with some fancy footwork as he flicks the ball to Tsimikas.

It sits up nicely and Tsimikas fancies a go but his dipping volley flies narrowly over.

18:12

12 min – Gomez cross misses everyone

Gomez is getting forward early on and he looks to pick out a teammate but his cross just evades everyone in the box.

18:10

10 min – Important last-ditch tackle denies Jota

Jota looks to be in after a through ball but Worrall just gets back in time to get a toe on the ball. That’s a brilliant tackle.

18:09

8 min – Keita clears dangerous cross

Lolley should perhaps shoot but he crosses instead.

Keita just gets back in time to cut out the ball in. Forest have started brightly.

18:08

7 min – Oxlade-Chamberlain shot blocked

Good play from Gomez who intercepts a cross-field pass.

He plays the ball into the path of Oxlade-Chamberlain who lets fly, but his shot is charged down.

18:04

4 min – First attack for Forest

Gomez is dispossessed in midfield and Forest break through Johnson. Liverpool get back well, though, and his cross goes straight to Alisson.

18:02

2 min – Elliott caught just offside

Lovely ball over the top from Keita and Elliott is through in a dangerous position.

However, he has just mis-timed his run and the flag goes up.
