‘It was water off a duck’s back!’ Steven Gerrard aims jibe at ‘relatively QUIET’ Man Utd fans after Aston Villa boss and Liverpool icon received boos on Monday night – adding he has been to ‘noisier stadiums’ than Old Trafford

Steven Gerrard could not resist a dig at Man Utd fans after Aston Villa’s defeat at Old Trafford on Monday, insisting the level of abuse he received was ‘relatively quiet.’

Villa were knocked out of the FA Cup after Scott McTominay’s early goal decided the third round contest last night, despite the visitors dominating periods of the game and having two goals disallowed.

Yet Gerrard, who received boos at the Theatre of Dreams during his legendary days at Liverpool, poked fun at the United fans afterwards by describing the boos he was on the receiving end of as like ‘water off a duck’s back’.

Steven Gerrard said the Old Trafford crowd were ‘relatively quiet’ on his return to the ground

It was Villa boss Gerrard’s first time facing Manchester United in his managerial career

Responding to a question about the chanting from home fans, Gerrard said: ‘Relatively quiet! I have been to noisier stadiums than this.

‘It was a good cup tie, a good atmosphere but in terms of what I got, water off a duck’s back.’

Gerrard turned around and stared down the Stretford End as he walked towards the dugout at Old Trafford

It was Gerrard’s first managerial contest against rivals United after a serious of battles against them during his time at Liverpool.

Completely unfazed, Gerrard stared down the Stretford End before the FA Cup clash began

Gerrard will be pleased with his side’s display but will have rued a few missed opportunities to dump Ralf Rangnick’s team out of the FA Cup.

Villa had two second-half goals ruled out, the first after a lengthy video assistant referee review, but United also had some opportunities to put the game to bed earlier.

United will now go on to host Middlesbrough in the fourth round of the competition, while Gerrard will get the chance to silence those United fans when they make the trip to Villa Park on Saturday for their Premier League clash.
