‘He always gets something wrong’: Frustrated Manchester United fans call for Ralf Rangnick to play Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford in their ‘best positions’ as they hit out at ‘strange’ decision during FA Cup defeat

Manchester United supporters have aired their frustration online  after a ‘strange’ Ralf Rangnick tactic in their FA Cup defeat against Middlesbrough.

Chris Wilder’s Championship side beat the Red Devils 8-7 on penalties after the game finished 1-1 on Friday at Old Trafford.

And fans quickly took to social media to question interim manager Rangnick’s decision after another chance of a trophy went begging.

Fans insisted Jadon Sancho (c) and Marcus Rashford (r) should have played on opposite sides

Graeme said: ‘I’d like Sancho and Rashford to swap over and play in their best positions,’ with another adding: ‘Rashford on the right and Sancho on the left? Surely it would be better if Rashford was cutting in and Sancho was on the right’.

Another account tweeted: ‘Don’t have a clue why he’s put Rashford on the right and Sancho on the left. Rashford’s best position is LW (left wing) and we bought Sancho to play RW (right wing).’

A fourth continued: ‘Sancho for the right side, but our coach think he is better on the left side, it’s a shame. Just play Sancho right and Rashford left if they can’t perform like that sub them both. Until we get a coach with brains we are going nowhere’.

And one said: ‘Didn’t we sign Sancho to solve our RW problem? Wonder why they won’t play him there.’

Star forward Cristiano Ronaldo missed a first-half penalty after Paul Pogba was fouled, dragging his effort wide as Boro goalkeeper Joe Lumley went the right way.

Sancho scored to put the hosts ahead, but Matt Crooks equalised after the break despite the ball hitting Duncan Watmore’s hand in the build-up.

The £73million summer signing Sancho did score from the left hand side, beating Isaiah Jones before slamming the ball across Lumley, nearly scored a chip from the left and set up a glorious chance for Rashford, who was coming in from the right.

But fans insisted Rashford would be better linking up with full-back Luke Shaw on the left and cutting inside onto his stronger right foot, with Sancho better deployed on the right, where he often played for previous club Borussia Dortmund.

Fans insisted playing Marcus Rashford right and Jadon Sancho left was ‘strange’ and ‘wrong’

One added: ‘Why isn’t Rashford on left wing and Sancho on RW? Rashford isn’t good on RW,’ with another posting a picture of a confused dog with the caption: ‘Rashford on the right and Sancho on the left?’

A third tweeted: ‘I’d like to know, why were Sancho and Rashford playing on each other’s preferred side? Sancho is better on the right and Rashford on the left.’

But another continued: ‘Rangnick always gets something wrong. Bruno RM and Pogba LM. Sancho right and Rashford left. Why tweak stuff that should be easy? Sancho knows how to get involved from the right, Rashford doesn’t.’

And a fifth concluded: ‘Sancho and Fernandes on the left, Pogba and Rashford on the right. Rangnick vibes are strange but I am here for it,’ suggesting they support the move.
