FA CUP ROUND-UP: Boreham Wood stage stunning second-round upset at Bristol Rovers, Derby come from behind late on against Newport County… and Ipswich make the third round for the first time in three years with Buxton mauling

Boreham Wood’s love affair with the FA Cup continued on Sunday with a 2-0 win at League One Bristol Rovers at the Memorial Stadium.

The National League side, who knocked out AFC Wimbledon and Bournemouth last season before losing to Everton, go into tonight’s third-round draw thanks to goals by defenders Will Evans and David Stephens.

‘I couldn’t be more proud of my players, many of whom helped us earn a trip to Everton in the fifth round last season,’ said Boreham Wood manager Luke Garrard.

‘What we achieved then was magical, but to be in the third round again is unbelievable. They have risen to every challenge.

‘I’d have taken a draw just so we were in the hat, but the players delivered and I’m ecstatic.’

Derby County left it late before coming from behind to win 2-1 at Newport County, with David McGoldrick’s 88th-minute goal completing a second-half turnaround.

Priestley Farquharson’s header gave League Two Newport a first-half lead but Louie Sibley’s fine effort brought Derby level after 54 minutes and McGoldrick won it late on.

Ipswich, winners in 1978, reached the third round for the first time since being relegated to League One in 2019 as they smashed National League North side Buxton 4-0 at Portman Road.

After beating Alvechurch 2-1 on Saturday, Forest Green accused the FA of ‘hypocrisy’ for stopping them wearing ‘Just Stop Oil’ T-shirts earlier this month.

Forest Green chairman Dale Vince says Rovers tried to wear the T-shirts for their FA Cup tie against South Shields three weeks ago but the FA deemed it to be a political message.

England were one of seven nations threatened by FIFA with ‘unlimited’ sporting sanctions if they wore an anti-discrimination armband at the World Cup and Vince believes there are parallels between the cases.
